As crazy as it may seem, Sony have taken a ‘back seat’ approach and have not made it mandatory for PSP games to be released on PSN. Due to this Undead Knights, Naruto Shippuden: Legends: Akatsuki Rising, NBA 2K10, Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes and Cars: Race O Rama (all being released after the PSPgo) currently have no digital version. Will other publishers decide to go down this route and keep their games only on UMD?

The publisher Namco noted specifically that “there are currently no plans to release Akatsuki Rising on PSN right now,” despite its October 6 release on UMD.

Eric Lempel, SCEA’s director of PlayStation Network operations stated that “It’s up to individual third parties to decide if and when to publish their UMD releases on PSN. Most, if not all, are on board, as this is a revenue opportunity for them”

Sony America has said that it will not be possible for people to exchange their UMDs for digital versions of the games they already own.

We were evaluating a UMD conversion programme, but due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the programme at this time, – a spokesman told Kotaku, as reported by Eurogamer.

The idea would have been to hand in your UMD copy of a game and receive a digital copy of the same game in return.

In Europe, however, Sony is offering people who upgrade to PSPgo the choice of three free digital downloads, providing they own at least one UMD game.

There are 17 titles to choose from, including Echochrome, LocoRoco, Patapon, Resistance: Retribution and WipEout Pure. The deal, which will run between October 1 and March 31 2010, was announced at TGS yesterday.

Now here’s a game that will revive the PSP for me! There’s nothing like playing as Big Boss and killing enemies wearing balaclavas! When Hideo says he’s bringing the full Metal Gear Solid Experience to the PSP he’s not joking.

Now this is something that will not revive the PSP for me. Not just because Continue reading »

Sony’s PSP “minis” download games for the upcoming PSP Go are already prompting confusion, not least because of the company’s own guidelines for developers hoping to fast-track their submissions. Sony has revealed its policies for PlayStation Network approval, including details on the “accelerated approvals process”; unfortunately, for titles to qualify for that process they must be single-player, have no network or downloadable content, and no peripheral support.

An interview with an odd man who wears his son’s shorts…

Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations at SCEA has previously said that “you’re not going to see Trophies on the PSP,” citing piracy and the ability to upload save games as the main reason. “If people can artificially inflate their rankings and amounts of Trophies it kills the whole [Trophy] system,” he concluded. He’d obviously forgotten the fact that you could upload save games for the PS3 too until they started locking down the save files because of the Trophies, mind.

However, Shu Yoshida, Senior Vice President at Product Development at SCEA doesn’t seem to agree with Lempel, saying PSP Trophies are “under discussion,” although agreeing with his colleague’s view in this month’s Official PlayStation Magazine (US) that “there are some technical challenges.” Nobody from Sony’s said, to my knowledge, whether Trophies on the PS3 have helped attach rate, but surely with Store downloads (and no piracy) there’d be a lot more PSP titles shifted.
